Phoenix police: Man forced runaway teen into prostitution
Phoenix police arrested a man Wednesday on suspicion of meeting a 17-year-old girl who was living on the streets and forcing her to prostitute herself.
Michael Marion Cotham, 39, was arrested about 6 p.m. near 16th Street and Camelback Road, said Tommy Thompson, spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.
Police believe the teenage girl ran away from a foster shelter and was living on the streets when she met Cotham, Thompson said.
Police suspect Cotham had the girl prostitute herself for about a month, Thompson said.
Police found two women who authorities suspect were prostituting themselves in connection with Cotham, Thompson said. No charges had been brought against the women.
One woman was arrested for an unrelated misdemeanor warrant, Thompson said.
Child Protective Services took over the care of the girl, Thompson said.

Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration released a memo Monday indicating that a state board – not the House speaker – has the authority to determine what items are displayed in the third floor Capitol Rotunda where the busts are located. House Minority Leader Mike Talboy, D-Kansas City, also asserted that Tilley has no legal authority to order Limbaugh’s bust to be placed in the Capitol Rotunda.
“The secrecy and exclusion of the public demonstrates that even Republicans are embarrassed at honoring someone who recently called a female college student with whom he disagreed a ’slut’ and a ‘prostitute,’” Talboy said.

SEATTLE (AP) – Mayors of nearly 50 cities across the country are urging Village Voice Media to require identification for people posting escort ads on Backpage.com – its online ad service that has come under scrutiny from authorities for allegations that it’s used to promote child prostitution.

Backpage.com critics say the site is used to advertise underage prostitutes who are often victims of sex trafficking. The mayors join state attorney generals, clergy, anti-sex-trafficking groups and others that have put pressure on Village Voice Media, Backpage.com’s parent company.

Shared Hope International has compiled a list of dozens of cases in 15 states in which girls were allegedly offered for sex on Backpage.com, most within the past year. The Seattle Police Department says it has linked 22 cases of child prostitution since 2010 to girls who were advertised as escorts on the website.

Phoenix police arrested a man early Wednesday morning on suspicion of holding a 17-year-old San Diego girl against her will and trying to force her into prostitution in Phoenix.
Michael Cantry, 32, was arrested just after midnight at an apartment complex near McDowell Road and 41st Avenue in Phoenix, said Officer James Holmes, spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.

Cantry is suspected of using fear to force the teenage girl and adult woman to “walk the streets” and make money for him, Holmes said. Cantry told the woman and the teenager, according to police, that each needed to make $500 for him before they could leave a well-known prostitution track in Phoenix.
The woman eventually participated in a prostitution deal but the girl didn’t because she was scared, Holmes said.

Mayors of nearly 50 cities across the country are urging Village Voice Media to require identification for people posting escort ads on its Backpage.com — an online ad service that has come under scrutiny from authorities for allegations that’s it’s used to promote child prostitution.
In a letter sent Monday by the United States Conference of Mayors, the cities’ leaders say that authorities continue to find advertisements on Backpage.com that “reflect underage sex trafficking.”
Backpage.com critics say the site is used to advertise underage prostitutes, often victims of sex trafficking.
Village Voice Media owns 13 alternative weekly newspapers, including Phoenix New Times.
Critics estimate that Village Voice Media makes more than $22 million per year from sex-related ads, a figure the Phoenix-based company has not disputed.

Medical Examiner Classifies Shannan Gilbert’s Death As ‘Undetermined’

OAK BEACH, NY (CBSNewYork) – Authorities have released the autopsy results of Shannan Gilbert, the New Jersey prostitute whose body was discovered near where 10 other victims of a suspected serial killer were found along Ocean Parkway.
The results released Tuesday classify Gilbert’s death as “undetermined,” according to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Gilbert’s mother, Mari, said she’s frustrated with the report.
“I was hoping for something more substantial and solid,” she said.
Gilbert’s remains were found on Dec. 13, 2011 in a marshy area on Oak Beach about a quarter-mile from where her cell phone, purse, jeans, shoes and lip gloss were found the week before.
Police have said detectives believe Gilbert drowned when she was last seen running and screaming for help in Oak Beach back in May of 2010.

A total of 10 bodies were found including that of a toddler, an Asian man dressed in women’s clothing, and body parts belonging to remains found in Manorville in 2000 and 2003. Half of the remains found along Ocean Parkway during the searches have been identified. All five of those identified were young women who worked as prostitutes.
