First, a look at the 12 stories in Phoenix Fled, a collection that has been described by Anita Desai as a ‘monument’ to India’s pre-independence past. The title story is about an old woman who, faced with the threat of communal violence in the aftermath of the Partition, refuses to leave her house when the rest of her family has fled. Alone and scared, she faces the mob that comes to set her house on fire but admonishes them thus: “Mind, she scolded, pointing her bony figure, “mind you do not step on the doll’s house.” Evidently, the mythical phoenix that can arise from its own ashes has fled in the face of the barbarism of the times. Elsewhere, as in ‘The Street of the Moon’, unable to take the tedium of marriage to a much-older, opium-quaffing cook, a high-spirited nubile young wife runs off with another servant, only to end up in the prostitute’s street. ‘The First Party’ is a touching tale o …

Let us first consider the 12 stories in Phoenix Fled. It is a collection that has been described by Anita Desai as a ‘monument’ to India’s pre-independence past. The title story is about an old woman who, faced with the threat of communal violence in the aftermath of the Partition, refuses to leave her house when the rest of her family has fled. … The investigation that’s taken place so far is comparable to something you’d find in Podunk County,” said attorney John Ray, who likened Police Commissioner Richard Dormer to the Pink Panther, a bungling French cartoon detective.
Since December, police have uncovered 10 other sets of human remains scattered across two Long Island counties, prompting competing theories of what led to their demise.
Ray on Tuesday accused Dormer’s office of violating the civil rights of the victims by inadequately investigating.
“He thinks this is some kind of a silly scene for the Suffolk County police to be involved in only because Shannan was an escort,” he said.
Neither Dormer nor Suffolk County Police were immediately available for comment about the allegations.
Gilbert, 24, vanished in May of last year, and the search for her led police to four female bodies seven months later. All four have since been identified, like Gilbert, as prostitutes who advertised online.

The mother of Shannan Gilbert, the New Jersey woman whose remains were found last week near Oak Beach, has asked the Justice Department to take over the investigation into her death and the killings of 10 others, found along Ocean Parkway.
Authorities suspect the 10 victims were killed by one or more serial killers, but say they do not believe Gilbert was the victim of a homicide.
Attorney John Ray, who represents Gilbert’s family, said the Suffolk police “have blown completely this investigation from the outset.”
The remains of Gilbert, 24, who worked as a prostitute, were found last week in a thicket near where she had fled the home of a client in the Oak Beach gated community. The search for Gilbert was launched shortly after she went missing in May 2010.

The letter asserts federal authorities can take the lead in the probe of the 10 deaths attributed to the killer or killers because of the Violence Against Women Act and because Gilbert crossed state lines for prostitution.
The request also comes as Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota is in public disagreement with Police Commissioner Richard Dormer’s single-killer theory.
Spota on Monday in a Newsday story said Dormer has often said too much, too soon about the skeletal remains found near Gilgo and other South Shore communities.
Spota said Dormer’s comments that a single killer was responsible for all the remains found in Gilgo and nearby beach communities might hurt efforts to win convictions. If there are arrests in the case, the airing of different theories suggests disagreement within law enforcement over who is responsible.

Gilbert disappeared from Oak Beach in May 2010 while working as a prostitute. The search for her yielded the December 2010 discovery of the bodies of four other women who police said also worked as prostitutes.

Gilbert, 24, vanished in May 2010 after visiting a client. The Jersey City resident, police said, had advertised for prostitution services on websites such as Craigslist.
Her body was uncovered Tuesday in the wooded marshes of Suffolk County’s Oak Beach. The cause of her death has not yet been determined, police said in a statement.
“Our condolences to the Gilbert family and her friends,” said Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. “We hope this brings them closure and peace.”
Investigators cut through a fresh thicket of brush and bramble along Long Island’s southern shoreline earlier this week, expanding their investigation across a recently drained swampland on the barrier island before uncovering Gilbert’s remains.
They were found at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday by police divers and detectives riding atop amphibious vehicles, roughly a quarter-mile from where her purse was found a week before.

All four were later identified as women and, like Gilbert, had advertised for prostitution services online.

Remains found on Long Island beach identified as missing prostitute Shannan Gilbert
OAK BEACH, N.Y. — Authorities identified Saturday the human remains discovered on a Long Island beach as those of missing prostitute Shannan Gilbert.
The Suffolk County Medical Examiner said in a statement that it had positively identified Gilbert’s remains, but the cause of death has not yet been determined.
The Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad is continuing the investigation, the statement said.
Gilbert’s May 2010 disappearance in Oak Beach, a gated community on Long Island’s south shore, led to the unexpected discovery of the remains of 10 victims of a suspected serial killer.
After months of searching, police last week found human remains and Gilbert’s jeans, shoes, purse, ID and cellphone in a marshland near where she was last seen.

Investigators had said Gilbert, who lived in New Jersey and worked as prostitute, was in the area to see a client.
