In 2007, Nicolosi came under fire after an essay seeming to justify slavery appeared on NARTH’s website. In the piece, “Gay Rights and Political Correctness: A Brief History,” Dr. Gerald Schoenewolf, a New York psychotherapist and member of the group’s science advisory committee, wrote, “Africa at the time of slavery was still primarily a jungle. … Life there was savage … and those brought to America, and other countries, were in many ways better off.” (Nicolosi stepped down as NARTH president after criticism mounted, but he remains instrumental in the group.)
Then, in 2010, George Rekers, a psychologist and also a scientific adviser to NARTH, was photographed at Miami International Airport with a 20-year-old male prostitute who had accompanied him on a 10-day European vacation. Rekers insisted he had hired the man, who advertised his services on Rentboy.com, merely to carry his luggage. The man disagreed. He told reporters he had given Rekers daily nude massages that included genital contact.

PHOENIX – The possibility of porn companies moving from California to Arizona could mean penalties for them and their actors.
There’s word adult film businesses could relocate to the valley because of a new ordinance in Los Angeles that requires actors to use condoms during video shoots.
The Maricopa County Attorney says anyone paid to appear in porn could be convicted of prostitution under Arizona law.
Bill Montgomery also says companies who solicit actors or establish venues for filming here could also face felonies if caught.

… A Humboldt penguin escaped from a zoo in Japan, and people were reporting sightings Monday in a river in Tokyo. The 1-year-old penguin managed to climb over a rock wall that is twice its size. Zoo officials don’t believe they can recapture the penguin if it’s swimming, but if it rests somewhere, they believe they can grab it.
- “At AOL one of our core values is that we act with integrity. We have monitored the unfolding events and have determined that Mr. Limbaugh’s comments are not in line with our values. As a result we have made the decision to suspend advertising on The Rush Limbaugh Radio show.” – AOL statement on its Facebook page Monday. The company became the eighth sponsor to drop advertising on Limbaugh’s show after he called a law student a “slut” and “prostitute” because she was going to testify in Congress about birth control.

Bad Sex, Men’s Role in Buying and Selling Women, starts out with the painful story of a 15-year-old girl forced into prostitution. The article raises important issues regarding the commoditization and dehumanization of women. Beyond a focus on men who are willing to pay for sex, it examines the link between pornography and sex trafficking, arguing that a wider cross-section of men must be considered “enablers” of the sex trafficking trade. In a poignant passage in the article, filmmaker Philip Abraham, while shooting a documentary (Volviendo, being released nationwide in October) about the Latin American sex trade awakens to the reality that in watching pornography, he too is engaging in the global sex trade.
The article also points out (via research done by Mary Anne Layden, director of the sexual trauma and psychopathology program at the University of Pennsylvania) that men who cultivate prostitutes and pornography become less satisfied with their regular female partner’s attractiveness, sexual performance and level of affection. Those wh …

PHOENIX – A Romanian man accused in a 2008 rape case has been extradited to Italy after being arrested in Arizona.
Federal authorities said Tuesday that 34-year-old Giuliano Matei was ordered to be extradited to Italy to face charges of rape and trafficking of a minor.
He had been held in federal custody without bond following his arrest in Phoenix last Oct. 27.
Authorities say Matei allegedly threatened a 17-year-old girl in November 2008 to induce her to travel from Romania to Italy, where he forced her to steal items that he would later resell.
When she objected to stealing, Matei allegedly raped her and threatened her with prostitution. The girl was able to escape and contacted Italian police.

The amended bill also includes two new provisions based on concerns raised by the fireworks industry.
First, it calls for the creation of standardized signs to be posted in all retail facilities selling fireworks, warning buyers of possible regional restrictions and outlining the state’s 16–or–older age requirements. Secondly, it prohibits a municipality or county from punishing someone who purchases or uses state-approved fireworks with a penalty greater than a petty offense.
The latter provision was recommended after some municipalities made it a Class 1 misdemeanor to use even Arizona–approved fireworks, said Mike Williams, a lobbyist who represents TNT Fireworks and helped write the first fireworks legalization bill.
“Class 1 is way out of line with what the statute should be,” Williams said. “That ranks fireworks with prostitution, assault and DUI.”
