In the spirit of transparency, I’ve been mostly disinclined to write about sex work of any kind, sacred or profane, for many reasons, including degradation concerns rooted deep in a conservative-leaning childhood (The fact that I write about sexuality at all is at odds with what was expected of me, but that’s fodder for another article). On one hand, my biases are too ingrained, too part of the fabric of who I am to offer even the hint of objectivity. On the other, the culture in which we live has a complex relationship and stark opinions about those who offer sex services, or are willing to pay.

  Touchy Conundrum
Is that always the case? Does introducing sexual touch always diminish the sanctity of the experience when the people involved are not in some sort of real and agreed upon (I mean that loosely and trust that each reader generates their own idea of what that means) relationship? After communicating with Maya, I found myself …

Dead escort’s mom: FBI should take L.I. serial killer case
The mother of prostitute Shannan Gilbert demanded Tuesday that the FBI take over the Long Island serial killer probe from “clownish” local police.
Mari Gilbert said she is certain her daughter was murdered like the ten others whose bodies were dumped on Gilgo Beach — and that she didn’t accidentally drown like Suffolk County cops think she did.
“The investigation that’s taken place so far is comparable to something you’d find in Podunk County,” said Gilbert’s lawyer, John Ray.
He accused Suffolk police of violating the civil rights of the victims by bungling the investigation and said he will file a lawsuit if the FBI doesn’t step in.
Gilbert, 24, traveled from Jersey City, N.J., to meet a john in Oak Beach, L.I., before she disappeared in May 2010. Her skeletal remains were found in a marsh in Oak Beach, L.I., last week. Police believe she fled the john’s home in drug-induced hysterics, got lost, stumbled i …

They were terrible on defense (allowing recent Hornets acquisition Eric Gordon to nab 20 points), awful on offense (shooting only 39.5 percent from the field), and were particularly bad from three-point range (going 5-for-25 beyond the arc).
Oh, and rookie Markieff Morris screwed up a last-second chance to win the game. That’s because, despite all their struggles last night, Phoenix managed to eek out a lead in the second half after being behind for the first two quarters and was less than a minute away from victory.
Thanks to pimp scoring efforts by Marcin Gortat (13 points, five rebounds) and Robin Lopez (21 points, seven rebounds), the Suns led by as much as eight points during the fourth quarter against New Orleans (who kept battling back into the game) and clinged to a 84-83 lead with 58 seconds left in regulation.

The body of a missing New Jersey prostitute, whose search turned up 10 other bodies on New York’s Long Island, has been found in a dense thicket about a half mile from where she disappeared. The skeletal remains belong to Shannan Gilbert who was 24 years old when she vanished.
Gilbert, a known prostitute, was reported missing on May 1.
Although the medical examiner has yet to identify the remains officially, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Police Commissioner Richard Dormer was certain the remains found were Gilbert’s.
Search Launches Serial Killer Probe
“It’s certainly a sad day for the Gilbert family,” he said. “And our condolences to that family on the death of their daughter.”

Authorities said all of the victims were linked to the sex trade. The toddler was identified as the child of one of the prostitutes found along Ocean Parkway and the man was dressed in women’s clothing.

Suffolk County police found yesterday what they believe are the skeletal remains of 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, a prostitute who disappeared last year.
The remains were discovered after police cleared heavy brush from an area that had previously been underwater.
The medical examiner has not yet confirmed the identity or determined a cause of death, but Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said the remains were found a quarter-mile from where Gilbert’s personal belongings were found Dec. 6. He said the position of the remains indicates that the victim may have been trying to reach the lights of the causeway before she died.
During the search for Gilbert, police uncovered the remains of 10 people, many of them prostitutes. A police spokeswoman said yesterday that, while they think those 10 people are victims of one serial killer, they do not believe Gilbert’s death is related. That’s because of where she was found and her demeanor during a 911 call, police said.

But she was still in disbelief about the police theory that her daughter, who worked as a prostitute, died accidentally after running from the house of a client into a marsh and then a dense thicket in the darkness.

Suffolk County police announced today that they believe they found the skeletal remains of the 24-year-old woman who went missing May 1, 2010 in marshland near Oak Beach, a gated community in Long Island where Gilbert, a prostitute, was visiting a client.
Last Wednesday police announced a major breakthrough in the search for Gilbert after finding her pocketbook with an ID, a pair of jeans, shoes and a cellphone in a swampy area northeast of the gated community.
Today, Suffolk County police detectives and Department of Public Works employees spotted the corpse from an amphibious vehicle one quarter-mile northeast of the belongings found last week, in an area of marshland that had been drained last Thursday to enable the search.

Gilbert has a standing indictment in Hudson County as a co-defendant in a case concerning First Professional Referral Services, the escort service where she was allegedly employed, on charges of conspiracy and promoting prostitution, DeFazio said.

Corpse Found Near NY Beach Is Likely Prostitute’s
After a yearlong search, police on New York’s Long Island said Tuesday they believe they have discovered the skeletal remains of a New Jersey prostitute whose disappearance sparked an investigation into a possible serial killing spree.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said searchers found the bones at around 9:15 a.m. in a dense wetland thicket, about a half mile from where 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert disappeared after meeting a client for an early-morning sexual encounter.
Dormer said the medical examiner’s office would confirm whether the remains were Gilbert’s, but the commissioner left little doubt that officers had found their intended target.
“It’s certainly a sad day for the Gilbert family,” he said. “And our condolences to that family on the death of their daughter.”

Nineteen months after Shannan Gilbert disappeared, and exactly one year after the investigation into her case led to the discovery of the first of 10 bodies on Long Island, police say they’ve found her remains. This morning a body was located in a marsh near where Gilbert’s belongings were found earlier this week, and authorities are confident that it’s her.
Police say the area initially wasn’t searched very well because it was partially underwater and looked completely impassable. This week investigators cut away the brush, which Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer described as a “very, very tough, desolate, tangled mess.” Authorities still believe that Gilbert, a New Jersey sex worker, ran from a client’s house and got caught in the marsh while trying to make her way to the highway. Dormer added, “there is no way Shannan Gilbert could have made it through that mess to get to the parkway.”
