While volunteers worked last week with prostitution suspects, undercover investigators patrolled the Internet looking for activity and patrol officers saturated the streets looking for more. Detectives collected as much information as possible from those arrested to try to develop larger criminal cases against the people responsible for putting the suspects to work.
“The problem is just a symptom of something greater,” Phoenix police Lt. Jim Gallagher said as he steered his unmarked car through areas known for prostitution, pointing out activity already taking place in the early-morning hours.
“Rarely is any criminal group involved in just one type of crime,” he said.
The program is the most recent manifestation of a change in the way Phoenix police approach prostitution, which was largely viewed as a quality-of-life issue until officers discovered a 15-year-old girl in 2005 whose pimp kept her locked inside a dog crate.
Investigators have now come to view prostitutes as human-trafficking victims, and they increasingly focus on targeting the pimps as traffickers, Gallagher said, likening their organizations to drug-smuggling rings.

Gerardo Parra’s Grand Slam Keeps the Arizona Diamondbacks From Getting Swept By the Atlanta Braves Over the Weekend
Thank heavens for Gerardo Parra. The left fielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks single-handedly saved his squad from utter humiliation yesterday by unleashing a grand slam during the final game of their four-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Chase Field.
His 419-foot homer during the second inning of Sunday’s game cleared the bases, gave the D-Backs an insurmountable lead, and fueled a 6-4 win that kept Arizona from getting swept by the Braves.
Parra was equally pimp in the bottom of the seventh when he contributed a clutch single, stole second base, and came home to provide an insurance run after Aaron Hill whacked one to deep left.
If only he could’ve salvaged the rest of the weekend for the Diamondbacks, who lost three straight against Atlanta prior to Sunday.

… Everyone’s saying, from the authorities, we don’t know what happened? Any common person knows what happened. And all that needs to be done is find the person who did it,” Ray said.
“No matter what it takes I’m going to keep fighting for my daughter and my family until the truth comes out, no matter what it takes,” Mari Gilbert said.
The search for Gilbert in the months after her disappearance led to the grisly discovery of a dumping ground on Gilgo Beach and along Ocean Parkway. A total of 10 bodies were found including that of a toddler, an Asian man dressed in women’s clothing, and body parts belonging to remains found in Manorville in 2000 and 2003. Half of the remains found along Ocean Parkway during the searches have been identified. All five of those identified were young women who worked as prostitutes.

Metal Mondays: Phoenix Needs a Heavy Metal Strip Club

I wasn’t really sure what to expect out of the Clubhouse, but I was fully prepared to be let down, honestly. I imagined the possibility of cheesy decor and seedy ambiance, like most strip clubs I’ve been to. But my surprise led to one conclusion: We need more strip clubs in Arizona owned by musicians. Oh yeah, and new booze laws. But that’s a whole other topic I’ll leave to the news section of the Phoenix New Times.

Agreed! Something like this would be cool. I suppose Shotgun Bettys in Scottsdale would be the closest thing to a Rock Strip Club. The BYOB thing is different too, never heard of that.  I enjoy a good gay strip club myself.  What I don’t enjoy is the fact that if there is full nudity, there can’t be alcohol served and you can’t BYOB.  Could someone please explain to me why alcohol is allowed when a cute guy is wearing a g-string, but not even if he is totally naked?  One would think Arizona would like the extra tax revenue. Romney declined to say one way or the other. “Well, I’ll have to look at his specific proposals but I do support his idea of moving forward on immigration legislation,” he said. “Look, the president has every four years, like his fellow Democrats, they trot out immigration as an issue they think they can get political support from, but then when they had the House, the Senate and the White House, they did nothing.  … And so Marco Rubio is saying, ‘Let’s deal with this in substantive way. I hope he’s successful in getting that done.’”
Romney previously has said he would veto the DREAM Act. Rubio is scheduled to campaign with Romney in advance of Tuesday’s primary in Pennsylvania, where Romney is likely to win but where the Florida senator has the ability to energize Hispanics and tea party supporters for the fall campaign ahead.
In another media interview Friday, Romney weighed in on the ongoing scandals in the Secret Service, where agents were said to have hired prostitutes on an overseas White House trip, and the General Services Administration, where top officials have been accused of holding lavish gatherings for employees at luxury resorts.

WASHINGTON Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is facing questions Wednesday from a Senate panel on the Secret Service prostitution scandal that embarrassed the White House and overshadowed the president’s visit to a Latin American summit. The Secret Service says two more of those implicated have been ousted, one stripped of his clearance and two cleared, resolving questions about the fates of the full dozen under investigation. Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said he wants to know how thorough the investigation into the misconduct has been and whether such behavior by agents has been tolerated in the past. “I think that’s a very legitimate question. And I’ve raised it twice with the director of the Secret Service. We’ll raise it again,” Leahy said on NBC’s “Today Show.” Other senators, particularly Republicans, had big plans for the televised hearing, the first public proceedings expected to touch on the scandal. The Secret Service announced late Tuesday that all 12 implicated had been dealt with: nine forced out, one stri …
