Academy Award-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix, 35, shockingly retired from acting to try and launch a rap career in two years ago. Many were, and continue to be, under the impression that Phoenix was simply carrying out an elaborate publicity stunt as he had director Casey Affleck follow his whereabouts to capture footage for a documentary.
After a private screening of Im Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix, the Los Angeles Times described the shenanigans that were contained in the documentary by writing [He was] snorting cocaine, ordering call girls, having oral sex with a publicist, treating his assistants abusively and rapping badly.
Despite the negative publicity, Magnolia Pictures has picked up Phoenixs documentary, according to AV Club. They announced their acquisition of Im Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix for a limited September 10 release, and they plan to distribute a wider release just one week later.
