Detectives first learned of the letter writer in 1999 when a Tucson girl’s family received a letter addressed directly to the 12-year-old.
The pedophile resurfaced in July when a Scottsdale girl received a similar letter.
Detectives linked more than 40 Arizona cases, mostly in Phoenix and Scottsdale.
According to a criminal profile, the “grandfatherly” pedophile is a well-educated older man who writes avidly and possibly worked in a field such as journalism, publishing or education, said Sgt. Darren Burch, who coordinates the Valley’s Silent Witness program.
“The crime is his writing of these letters, luring or soliciting sex from these girls,” Burch said. “This is not the child molester with a trench coat who hides behind a school.”
